But the numbers tell a sobering story. According to recent data, the average American family now spends between $10,000 and $20,000 annually on childcare, depending on the region and the child's age. In cities like San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C., full-time infant care can run higher than in-state college tuition. The financial pressure has become one of the primary reasons American families delay having children or choose to have fewer than they'd like.

The families who once swapped evenings and weekends in a shared act of mutual support weren't just saving money.
